Arnaud Vallin & Doriane Gable – Violins
Dominique Lobet – Viola, Jean-Philippe Martingnoni – Cello
“The remarkable thing about this team is that each player is quite capable of superlative solo performances, yet they blend with marvellous intimacy and mutually understood musicianship. Their playing has strength and tenderness, poetry and power.”
Wigmore Hall concert, reviewed by Geoffrey Crankshaw for Musical Opinion
“This was an evening of often stern modernism and fascinating forms and content, laid out by an accomplished quartet that sees no contradiction between the championing of music both old and new.”
Josef Woodward, Los Angeles Times
“The technique, ensemble and unanimity of these French musicians make comment seem superfluous.”
Martin Adams, Irish Times
Since its formation Quatuor Parisii has become a welcome visitor to concert venues throughout Europe, USA and the Far East, with a wide repertoire which encompasses all the major classical and romantic works for string quartet. In addition the quartet is noted for its interpretations of contemporary repertoire, particularly of contemporary French works. Programmes chosen for recent visits to the Newbury and Bath Festivals show the versatility of these musicians, and included an all-French programme (Fauré, Debussy and Ravel) and a programme of music from the Mediterranean with a mix of music from street sounds in North African cities to music newly written by composers from France, Greece and Italy and with additional instruments such as double bass, cymbalom and zarb! The Quartet performed at a sold-out Wigmore Hall concert in 2003 which was reviewed in The Strad as “a matchless performance.” The Quartet worked with Pierre Boulez on the “Livre pour Quatuor” to celebrate the composer’s 75th birthday, with performances in France and USA and at the York Late Music Festival where it was performed alongside Bach’s “The Art of Fugue”. Quatuor Parisii also performs much quintet repertoire and, in recent performances, has been joined by Pascal Rogé, Michel Dalberto, Martin Lovett, Anne Queffélec, Michael Collins, Leon McCawley and Ashley Wass. Recordings with BBC Radio 3 in 2006 included “La Bonne Chanson” with Jeremy Huw Williams and Ashley Wass and Schoënberg Quartet no 2 with Rachel Nicholls.
Quatuor Parisii has released recordings of “Livre pour Quatuor” and the complete string quartets of Darius Milhaud on the Auvidis label. Other recordings include Debussy and Ravel String Quartet (Auvidis), Franck and Pierne Piano Quintets (Ades) String Quartets by Roussel, Tailleferre and Ibert (Adda), Boccherini’s Six Oboe Quintets (Capriccio) and the complete works for string quartet by Webern (Accord). Two recordings in 2006 included chamber music by Honegger and the First Piano Quintet of Fauré. The quartet has made also many recordings of works by contemporary French composers.
Due to a serious accident while on tour in USA Jean-Michel Berrette left the quartet and was replaced by Doriane Gable.
